The amusement and theme park industry is not a particularly easy world for smaller players.
As rides need constant upkeep to pass safety audits and appear modern and interesting to visitors, the high operating costs are not always offset by the necessary visitors even in communities where the theme park has been a family staple for generations.
Brean Theme Park in the British coastal town of Somerset was assigned to liquidators at the start of 2026 while Six Flags closed six underperforming locations in its portfolio earlier this year. In California, the Fiesta Village Family Fun Park also closed down in July after operating outside San Bernardino since 1974.
Adventure Landing in North Carolina to close forever in August 2026
The newest name to announce a permanent shutdown after one last summer season is Adventure Landing in Raleigh. Announced in an Aug. 13 Facebook post, the final door closure has been set for Monday, Aug. 16 and leaves guests who want to experience the park for one last time with just one weekend to do so.
The amusement park came to North Carolina in 1988 and became a local family favorite with its unconventional amusement park concept: one central Adventure Speedway go-kart that stretches throughout the park for a quarter mile and additional attractions such as mini golf, batting cages and laser tag spread throughout the rest of the park.

“From birthday parties and family outings to our annual Easter Egg Hunts on the mini golf course and countless community events, we’ve cherished every opportunity to give back and be part of so many special moments,” Hank Woodburn, the owner of Adventure Landing, wrote on the park’s Facebook page. “While we are saddened to say goodbye, we will always be thankful for the memories we’ve created together.”

Why Adventure Landing is closing down in 2026
Woodburn did not elaborate on the reasons for the closure or why it was announced so suddenly (in similar situations, the theme park owners will usually announce it at the start of the summer so that guests can come in during one last season).
When pressed by some customers in the comments underneath the post, Woodburn confirmed that they will be auctioning off rides and other assets upon closure.
Due to the sudden shudown, any regular visitors who have remaining tickets, gift cards or gaming tickets will lose them unless used over the next two days.

Underneath the post and in other corners of social media, multiple Raleigh visitors who remember visiting the park over the last four decades expressed their sadness about losing what for them is a source of family and childhood memories.
Adventure Landing is a wider group of amusement parks which had additional locations in Florida, New York and Texas. The last remaining Florida location in St. Augustine also closed permanently in April 2026 while the park in Jacksonville was shut in 2021.
The remaining locations in Dallas and Buffalo continue to operate with a similar concept of a central go-kart track and different smaller rides and attractions around it.
